ELECTRIC SUPPLY
APPREHENSION FELT. DELAY ON WAITAKI HYDRO. CHRISTCHURCH, April-8. Tiie drastic reductions of staff at the Waitaki hydro-electric works and the consequent indefinite postponement of the date at which electric power will become available from this source are causing some apprehension in Christchurch. The Waitaki scheme has been regarded here as a necessary adjunct to Coleridgt* ,if the city is to be given an assurance that there will be no repetition of power shortage; and representations have been made from time to time urging, that this source ol supply should be made available at the eariest possible date. The repeated assurances that the Waitaki scheme would be in operation in 1933 will now, it is felt, go by the board, and no prediction can be made as fo when this second means of supply will be available. The dismissal of a large section of the workers means that the construction work will be retarded to a very marked degree, with the result that the desired addition to the Coleridge supply becomes a thing of the very indefinite future.
