SMOKE NUISANCE
INVESTIGATIONS BEING MADE
LONDON, April 6
Coreful investigations are being made in Britain concerning tne extent to which impurities travel through the air a n d affect the'countryside and towns at a distance. It is now realised that smoke may travel far, and that its range is generally in proportion to the size of the offending town, or group of towns. Observations by aeroplanes have noted the* effects of smoke from North Country manufacturing towns as far •■way as the south coast of Ireland. Governments of Britain have been investigating the smoke problem since 1273, when the use of coal in London was forbidden, and still a great many of its fundamental aspects remain unsettled. The elaborate nature of the present research is a guarantee that the matter is being studied more systematically than ever before.
