SERIOUS CHARGE
ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.
THREE' MEN COMMITTED,

PALMERSTON N., April 8
Arising from the assault and robbery, in which Charles Joseph Williams was the victim on March 31st., John Schumacher, a labourer, aged 25, and Frederick Murray, a plasterer, aged 35, appeared in Court this morning, and pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery with violence, the sum involved being £53. Sydney Sellwood, a plasterer, a get! 43, pleaded guilty to received from Schumacher the sum of £l4 knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Detective Jam-old gave evidence of a statement made by Schumacher, who said that he met Murray at Palmerston North, being introduced by Sellwood. Murray had said that he knew a bookmaker here, and if they went the right way about it, could get a few hundred pounds off him. Later Murray and Schumacher planned to wa|yl;ay Williams, who, however had only £53. Schumacher and Murray carried out the robbery, Sellwood having nothing to do with this. The pair later separated and -arranged to meet in Wellington. The money was divided between the three. Murray admitted that he was out of prison only three weeks, and had been sentenced to two years’ for theft. All accused were committed for sentence to the Supreme Court.
