BIG DISMISSALS
250 MEN AT WAITAKI. ENGINEER PAYS TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph—Per Brest Association) OAMARU, April 6. Mr R. H. Packwood, engineer at the Waitaki Hydro works, interviewed, stated that the statement that the men 'there are being forced, after dismissal, to leave their huts is absolutely incorrect, as also was the statement that the dismissed men would not leave the job until the Government .found them other employment. The position was that no action had been taken to force the men to leave the huts. On the contrary the men applying for permission to remain had been, granted it. There had been no trouble with it-he single men, who were dismissed. They were accepting the position philosophically.
He said that two hundred and fifty men had been discharged. About one hundred and fifty of -them left on Monday, but seventy-two were still in the camp where there was ample hu't accommodation.
Mr Packwood paid a tribute to the men, wlho, he said, had acted in an exemplary manner.
