UP A TREE

COW’S STRANGE SURROUNDINGS

tSomc time ago a statement was made that a “cow climbed kiipT'#'tree,” but this wa 9 not taken 'to A seriously. However, it is true tthat a -cow- was up a tree one night at New Lynn, Auckland, last week. Father and son went one morning to milk the herd, and alter four cows had been put through, the father asked of 'his son “Where’s Newcomb?” This favourite cow was not to be , K een among the unmilkerl cows. Search was made,' and ultimately Newcomb was discovered in the'almost unbelievable position of being up a tree heading -for a creek below/ The animal had evidently slipped over a high bank, landing right in the centre of a native tree, from which it was impossible for it to extricate itself. The cow had been in that position some hours, and it now became a real task 'to release it. This was successfully accomplished by roping the beast, cutting the branches of the tree, and gradually lowering Newcomb into the water, the son ultimately towing the cow some it wo hundred yards waist deep up the stream to a low part of the ‘bank. Although much bruised and swollen' tie cow is recovering from its “night out” up the tree.
