PHAR LAP’S RECORD,

Phar Lap was bred in Canterbury by tile late Mr A. F. Roberts, whose KaitUltra- stud was dispersed last week. Phar Lap is by -the imported sire, Night ißaid, a Radium horse who won races in Australia before he came to the Dominion, while his dam, Entreaty, is by Winkie, from Prayer Wheel, by Pilgrim’s Progress from Catherine Wheel, a Maxim mare, who earned early stud fame as the dam of Treadmill. When offered for sale at Trentham as a yearling, he did not attract much notice, and he was purchased for 160 guineas by a commissioner, acting for the “exNew Zealander, H. R. Telford, who had been in Australia ‘for several year s . Telford persuaded Mr D. J. Davis to take the youngster, who was raced -early on lease by Telford, who also trained him, and later by his trainer and Mr Davis in partnership. He showed no special form at two years, but early in his three-year-old season he developed fast. He won the Rosehill Guineas, while at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting he captured the Derby and the Craven Plate, thus establishing himself firmly as a good horse. An easy win in the Victoria Derby followed, but two other New Zealand-bred horses, Niglitmarch and J.’aqui-to, beat him into third place in the Melbourne Cup. In the autumn he won the Victoria St. Leger, Gov* oimov’t Platt! and King’s Plate at Flcin. jllgtqn, whily at Rjijiclwick ho won t)io St, Leger, Qnmberhmd 'Stakes and A-J. 0. Plate. In 'the following spring he von the Chelmsford Stakes, Spring (Stakes and Craven Plate, on each occasion second place being filled by Nightmarch, who declined the contest in the Randwick Plate, which Phar Lap also won. Then he went to Melbourne, where he won the 'Melbourne Stakes as a preliminary to the Melbourne Cup, in which he had an easy victory under 9.12, while later in the meeting he added the Linlithgow Stakes and the C. B. Fisher Plate. In the autumn he won the St. George Stakes, Futurity Stakes (carrying 10.3), Essendon Stake 9 and King’s Plate. Materline beat him in the- C. M. Lloyd Stakes and he was not raced again last season. He re-appeared in the spring, winning the Hill Stakes at Roselrill before tackling Randwick, where, he was successful in the Spring Stakes, Craven Plate and Randwick Plate. Going on to Melbourne, he won tile W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. A week later he won the Melbourne Stakes and his final Australian appearance was made in the -Melbourne Cup, in which -he failed under 10.10, a weight which took much of the sting out of his defeat.

Latest Race Makes Fiftieth Start. The race at Agua Caliente marked the fiftieth start of Phar Lap, whose Australian record is summarised in the following table: —
