THUNDERSTORMS
AWE INSPIRING EFFECTS
MUCH DAMAGE DONE
(Australian Press Association.)
(Received this day at 9.25 a.m) SYDNEY, April u
Several days’ display of lightning culminated last night in an awe inspiring thunderstorm and torrential rain, which did much damage in Sydnev and environs.
A fireball struck, and burned through the electric train overhead wires at Eastwood, and the engine of an incoming country train came in contact with the sagging wires, causing two startling explosions, the crew having a remarkable escape from injury.
Electric trains in several suburbs were interrupted, even the harbour bridge train being delayed slightly, while a number of low lying places were flooded, in one case to a depth of six feet, as the result of a couple of hours downpour. Two circus elephants, alarmed by the lightning and thunder, broke loose from their stable® at Redfern and ran wild in the busy streets scaring women and children. They then entered Redfern Park damaging the trees till they were recaptured by their keepers.
