A wave of house breaking, smash and grab burglaries, and warehouse and shop raids, many of which are' associated with stolen motor cars, is spreading throughout Britain, in order to cope with the problem Trenchard, the new Chief of Police, has asked for five thousand special constables to volunteer for night duty and assist London police to protect life and property.
