(By Teleyraph,—Per Press Association)
CHRISTCHURCH, March 31
Mr J. McCombs and Mr H. J. Armstrong, M’s. P., made an effort to-dav to settle the strike of the unemployed men against the conditions under which the relief work is offered by the Unemployment Board, and the Waimakariri River Trust. They had a conference with the representatives of the Trust this morning. A suggestion was made that the men should accept work until the next meeting of the Trust on April 10, in the expectation that possibly the Trust might be able to subsidise their wages to some extent. Neither of the parties to the conference had power to make an, agreement. Mr Armstrong addressed a general meeting of the unemployed men tonight, submitting this proposal. The press was not admitted to the meeting, which was very noisy. No statement wa s made as to the outcome of the meeting, hut the indications were I Suit the proposal was n o t accepted.
