IRISH REPLY

TO BRITISH NOTE

FRIENDLY TONE SUGGESTED.

(United Press Association—By Electro: Telegraph.—Copyright.;

DUBLIN, March So.

It is officially stated that the delay in transmitting the Free State’s reply to the British Government is due to redrafting. It is understood at least two members of the Free State Cabinet are opposed to the uncompromising nature of the original draft, they suggesting a more friendly tone, and to this suggestion President De Valera has agreed.

CANADIAN ATTITUDE

BRITAIN CONSULTS DOMINIONS.

NEW YORK, March 30.

The “New York TimesW Ottawa correspondent states : —Although the Canadian Government have not intimated to President De Valera that, if 'the oath of Allegiance is abolished, the Tree State will not be Invited to the Imperial ! Economic Conference, the Government have, unexpectedly, issued a White Paper, elaborately setting Oiit the I'll’ee State’s obligations itt fespect of the oath) and also of land annuities, the only apparent purpose for which is to prepare the public mind for such action as is contemplated should President De Valera repudiate the oath. In the absence of any’ definite Government statement, the prevailing attitude is that. if the Irish Free State repudiates membership of the British Empire, it has no place at the council tables of Empire conference, and will not be permitted there if Canada’s protest avails. It isi understood that the British Government have consulted Canada and other Dominions regarding the developments in the Free State.
