A FATALITY

ON OTIRA CORGE.

CRUSHED BY CAR

CHRISTCHURCH. -March 2G.

Crushed by a motor-car in the Ctira Gorge on h r.day. Air W illiain Bowden, of .\shburtoii, died before he could ho released. It was his 75th birthday. The car wag driven, by Afr J. AY. Bowden, junr., wiio had with him h.s father and mother. The driver and his mother were not hurt.

Tlie party, hound for Hokitika, left Arthur’s Pass for (Mira at’ 4 p.m. reaching the top of the zig-zag.-about 5 p.m. Ali-s Bowden was sitting with her son and the husband in was tiio back seat.

Going down the zig-.".ag in second gear the car commenced to gain speed. The driver endeavoured to change down to .first gear. The gears faded to engage and he endeavoured to step the car with the hand-brake. Tua vehicle skidded and turned into the bank.

Just- as the car hit the hank. Air Bowden, sen.,, opened the door and jumped. The car capsized, pinning Air Bowden between it and the hank.

Dasparate efforts were made by Mr Bowden jun., and his mother to release Air Bowden, but without avail. Then then commenced to walk back to Arthur’s Pass for help when they were picked up by another car and taken to Arthur’s Pass.

Guide Oscar Coberger took ft reliof party up from Arthur’s Pass, and Constable Robb, or.e from Otira, When the rescue parties got to the car, Air Bowden was dead. The body was taken to Otira by Constable Robb.

The late Air Bowden was well-known in Ashburton, where he was secretary of Alessrs Lane, Walker and Rudkin, Ltd., woollen manufacturers.

An inquest was opened at Otira on Friday night. After evidence of identification had been taken it A'as adjourned sine die.
