Three men and a big moton-lorry were concerned in a smash which took place at South Beach, near Greymouth, about 10.20 on Tuesday night. The lorry, used by Mr D. McPherson, of Wakefield, in fruit-carrying business, was returning to Grey mouth from Kokatahi, with a load of white pine to he used in box-making. Apparently becoming unmanageable in loose gravel, the lorry run off the road, through the feme, and into Seebeck’s garden, where it capsized. Jhe cab was torn off. but otherwise the loriy was not seriously damaged, whiie the occupants escaped practically unhurt, one of them receiving a cut <m one ot his fingers. The lurry A'as taken to the Grov Motors’ garage, fur repairs.

A correspondent writes: —“A party of 14 (five ladies and nine men) left the Kokatahi Hotel at 8. o’clock on Sunday morning to climb Mt. Newton. After riding on horseback lor 1G miles they bad lunch and then set- off to climb the mountain which is 4,OCX) fee* high. After arriving at the top, afternoon tea was indulged in, and then they had a good look round at the sights which can hardly be described. The mountain daisies, lillios and carrot font were something wondeiful. Alter returning to the foot of the bill a start was made lor the 10 miles on horseback. A sight not often seen nowadays is 14 good backs. After a wonderful day, they arrived at Kokatahi at 7.30 p.m.”

A Good Friday service will be held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to-morrow evening, einmoncing at i o’clock. Hitherto there has been no service on this day, hut it is anticipated that the now departure will receive the supoprt of the congregation.

There was a continued series of vivid lightning flnishe-s last evening between 7 and. 8 o’clock and later thunder also came into the picture, the experience lasting for over a couple of hours. There were also some very heavy rain showers at the same time.

Advice Inns been received by the Unemployment Committee, that 4A scheme id being further liberalised in that fanners may now obtain labour under the scheme for any additional work outside that already in hand. Formerly the restitution was for development work only, but this is now lifted, and the labour may be used ror any farm work in addition to the labour already on the farm.

The Hokitika Swimming Club will soon be winding up its season. The weather was not very propitious over the summer months, and the finances suffered accordingly. In order to clear off the deficit it is proposed to organise a special benefit after the holidays, and no doubt parents in particular will be glad to help in the matter. In response to the suggestion of Mr .1. O’Brien ("Westland) that the timber royalties to the Government should lie reduced, Mr Ransom said in the House that the difficulties of the timber industry were fully appreciated by the Government, and, so far as concerned the millers who were working in Crown areas, substantial concessions bad already been granted by reducing royalties, abolishing ground rent.; oil sawmill areas, and waiving the interest on postponed promissory notes.
