Four cases of infantile paralysis were reputed in jlihe Canterbury Health District cn Monday. Of the total, three cases were from the Christchurch metropolitan area, and one from outside it. , A most unusual accident occurred in the harbour at Auckland on Sunday afternoon to a skiff manned by members of tbe St. George s Rowing Club, when it was was about 150 yacls from the eastern gap of the Tamaki Drive. The crew were manoeuvring to enter upon a mile sprint up the harbour, when suddenly a crash was felt under the boat, which stopped immediately. Looking about, the oarsmen saw a large shark leap from the water and dash away. On returning to the sheds and drawing up the skiff, they found a large rent in the bottom, about Bin by 2in.
An unusual inc ident connected with street collection at Christchurch relates to Co put in his box on Friday by one of tbe collectors for the Mayors Relief of Distress Fund. The box Was owned and emptied and tested in the usual way when brought in by the collector, who had been out from 1 p.tn. to 5 p.m. It contained £2 Is 5d Yesterday the collector called to ascertain bow much his box contained; on Friday afternoon he did not wait to see it opened and the contents counted. When told the amount he said: “Why, 1 put £o in tnyself.” The box was then found and it seemed to be empty. Then it was decided to make an attack from the bottom, a portion of which was broken. This method proved successful, the note .being found in the cavity behind the lit> of the opening through which the monev and notes entered the box.

The trip was done in a day and a-half, and all were thrilled with the scenery. Miss Scarfe who is only 15 years of age, is the youngest persen to cross the Alps in the southern district. The trip across the ranges promises to grow in popularity. There js .a great variety in the scenery en route, and with the hot springs, and the remarkable outlook from that point set in a sub-tropical bush, with the snow capped peaks in full view, it would be difficult to find a more entrancing outlook anywhere.
