PROGRESS OF WORK

FIRST PORTION NEARS COMPLETION.

Considerable progress has been made with the-'erection of the new Anglican Cartihedrial during the last Hwddyg, months, the greater portion of the work being inside.,, have, arcade, aisle and gallcryjpphes, etc. The heavily' moulded • arches supposed on massive columns constructed entiitel.v of marble become a salient feature ,ip* the building. Over each column on the’ nave side and between the arches are s ix polished marble vaulting shafts richly carved bases and bosses. spanrails between and around the are constructed of special ished with terazzo surface. The? ■Storey walls immediately over th!b arches, together, with triforium passage? extending the full length of the? nave, are now finished up to the height of the top of the sill of the Clere Storey windows. • . *

AISLE ROOFS.

The aisle roofs are almost complete. The rich colour of the figured heart of rimu timber in these roofs makes a pleasing contrast with the finished stone .work inside.

A substantial temporary roof has been erected over the nave, which will carry the staging to enable thefe building to proceed and the permanent roof and ceiling to be finished without any into - f.prence with the use of the ower iai ‘

EARTHQUAKE SHOCK PROOF.

Some of the windows are already in position. During the last sixv tholrtlift some 15 tons of round reinforcing steel hay© been used throughout W Walls’and arches and spanrails.
