''Received this day at 9.25 a.m) SHANGHAI, March 18
There was a remarkable scene at the Shanghai racecourse this morning preparatory to tlie departure of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, who sailed for iiomo this evening. A large motor truck, laden with parcels arrived while the battalion was resting before marching to the troopship. The Chinese proceeded to unload the truck which contained hundreds of gaily wrapped parcels and, proceeding along the lines standing at attention, the Chinese distributed each man with a pair of sillc socks, and each officer with brocaded cushion covers, on behalf of the Chinese community.
Each parcel contained a card, expressing appreciation of their services ill safeguarding the > welfare of the city during the recent emergency. This v'as it direct contrast tt> 1927 when the British troops Were betoed. Other British forces received similar pregents.
Foreign diplomats to-day inspected the defence linos of the Japanese and Chinese with the purpose of determining conditions preparatory to the peace conference, which is expected to commence daily.
