There are now 31 men engaged in neighbourhood under the gold mining subsidy scheme of the unemployment proposals. This absorbs some £36 per month, and as a consequence restricts employment in the borough and county under No. o relief scheme. Next week funds will lie short again, and all married men will be on restricted tilin', while may single men will have to stand down. Only about half the sum actually required to give the men full time U available. It is understood there is an increasing number of registration:; throughout the district, which tends further to restrict the days worked by the individual workmen. It would appear a larger allocation should he provided for the district, or the gold mining •subsidy made a separate grant outside employment under No. 5 works.

Yardings of fat stock were heavy at tile Metropolitan Alarket at Addington on Wednesday. Butchers bought freely because stock bought at next week’s market cannot be killed in time for the Easter season. Fat cattle were forward in good numbers, and the quality of the yarding was fairly attractive. 'The offering included a good portion of handy-weight beasts which sold well. The others met a dragging sale at values about lbs a head below those ruling last week. The fat sheep section contained a yarding almost twice as large as that forward at the previous market. Values at the two preceding sales were high, particularly for the best class of sheep,) because-at neither sale was the offering large enough to meet the demand. The large yarding at yesterday's sale allowed butchers more freedom and values eased. For the best sorts the decline was up to 4s a head, but for less attractive sorts it was correspondingly less. Fat lambs wore also yarded in large numbers, and met a steady sale at values very little different from those ruling last week. There was an ample supply, and bidding was not so spirited. The veal entry was an ordinary one, an d Pi'i ces were a little higher than thus ruling at the previous sale. Handy-weight porkers were in short supply and the price firmed.
