A CONVICT'S RECORD
35 CHRISTMASES IN GAOL
LONDON, February 2
A man who was stated to have spent only one Christmas out of prison since ludo was sentenced by Mr Bingley, at the Marylebone Police Court yesterday, to nine months’ hard labour for stealing luggage from Paddington Station on two consecutive days.
The accused, Arthur Bennett, aged 57, described as a hairdresser, pleaded guilty to stealing a leather bag belonging to Sir Spencer Maryon-Wil-son, Bt., at Yettendon House, Berks, and St. James’s Court, Buckingham 'Gate, also to the theft of a suitcase belonging to Reginald Arthur Mansbridge, a soldier, of Rosebery Cottages, Crown Street, Reading, just returned from India.
Mr Bingley, the Magistrate, commented on the “terrible list” of convictions against Bennett in England and Australia, dating back to 1895. Detective Maskey mentioned that Bennett was arrested on this occasion four days after being released from prison. The detective added that Mr Moore, a builder and decorator, was willing to find Bennett a job and give him a start.
