FIRE

FACTORY BURNT,

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association) % i ■ CHRISTCHURCH, March 17.

A fire destroyed Clarkes Ltd, confectionary factory in Harman St., Spreydon, early this morning. The damage is estimated at over £4OOO including the loss of expensive machinery and stocks. The building covered a quarter of an acre. The insurances on the building, plant and stock total £2500 in the British Traders’ and Yorkshire Offices.

The employees were working late last night preparing Easter orders. The origin is a mystery, and the blaze was not discovered till 3 a.m., when it had a strong hold, and the brigade could only prevent its spread, as the heat was terrific.
