RELIEF BASIS. PREFERENCE TO MARRIED MEN WELLINGTON, March 14. The reorganisation ol the Ptiblii Works activities recently outlined »*■ expected to be in full operation by the hoginning of June next, Mr Coates stated, in an interview this morning. By the end of this week, lie said some 2000 men would have been put off and the process would be continued gradually week by week until the new scheme on a relief basis was in lull swing. The reduction was being made on a proportionate basis, a fleeting executive officers as well as permanent hands.
To prevent distress, the change-over was being spread over a reasonable period, said Mr Coates. The taking on of men on a relief basis would he done by negotiation, and, so far as possible preference would he shown to married men. Those who were employed tindci the new relief scheme would he on an infinitely better footing than those putting in two or three days a week on relief works outside.
