The competitions were inaugurated for the purpose 'of giving training to the younger members of the Brigade in .team work, and the results thieved, ful’y warranted the action taken, the res.this being very creditable ftf all concerned. The various events ftfere carried out’ in a manner, that was special credit ,to the younger mem |jj|rs, there being almost an absence of for faulty work, while there ®was the best cf good feeling and comradeship among the contestants themselves which m cle the work of the judges and other officials both light and pleasant.

A SOCIAL HOUR. In the evening at Mclntosh's Club rooms, members of the Brigade with officios of ithe day and a number of held a v&ry-'plaaftajwt »soaial •re*' union. The Superintendent {Mr J. J> Mclntosh) presided, nnd three hours passes d off quickly and enjoyably \tith toast, song and presentation, The toasts honored included the "The King,” The Hokitika Fre Board (responded to by the Chairman, Mr A. iR. Elcock), the visitors, the winning competitors, the officials of the day, the ■Superintendent and his officers, and the Press. Th? presentations were made to the winners of their trophies and medals, and a number of complimentary references were .made to the proceedings of the afternoon. It was generally acknowledged that the performances put up during the course of tile several competitions were of an excellent nature. Especially was this the case with the younger members contesting, for whom the demonstration was mainly arranged, and the experience would prove of decided value for future competitions, and in active fire prevention work. The medals won at the competitions were presented by Messrs AV. Hall, J. J. ■ Williams, R. Tennent, F. Chesterman and iR. Lynn, and during the evening the donors were accorded a special round of applause in appreciation of their generosity-fit the call of the Chairman. The gathering concluded just after midnight with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem, and was vo'ted one of the most enjoyable of many past functions of a .similai natuie.
