SHIP OVERLOADED

FINE IMPOSED ON MASTER. (By Telegraph — Ft. Press Association) NELSON, March 11. What the Magistrate described as a rather hovel charge, was called on today, when the Collector of Customs, charged Thos. Henderson, Master of the auxiliary vessel “The Portland,” with overloading his ship by submerging the centre loadline disc. The Collector „ , said the defendant took a ratfier serious view of the case in the interests of the safety of the crew.

For the defence, it, was stated that the ' weight of coal varied according whether -it was wet or not. The Magistrate said the law was made for preserving safety at sea. A fine of £5 was imposed.
