HOSTILE CROWD
CAPTURE OF THIEF POLICE QUELL DISTURBANCE. (Australian Press Association.J ' MELBOURNE, -March 10. There was almost a riot at the Port Melbourne markets on Satui day morning, following the capture of a chief by the manager of the markets (Mr J. Friedam). All immensely hostile demonstration was made against Mr- Friedam and Communists tried to provoke the; crowd to violence. •Mr Friedam had pursued and caught a thief who had stolen a bundle of stockings from a stall at the markets. Air Friedam fired shots from ins revolver before the fugitive was caught. Yielding ’to an appeal by the man’s mother, Air Friedam released big prisoner, but the crowd which had gathered was angered and threatened to attack Mr Friedam, who fired his pistol into the air as a warning. This enraged the crowd and a riot appeared to be imminent when the police arrived at the markets and quelled the disturbance.
