FIRE BOARD

ANNUAL MEETING HELD.

A SATISFACTORY YEAR.

The annual meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board was held last evening whe„ there were.present Messrs A. R. Jtlcock, (Chairmna), C. L. Green and K- E Bain, representing the Underwriters Association., J. J. Breeze senr., and the Superintendent, Mr J. J. Mclntosh. An apology was received from Mr W. C. Braddon. ./

Mi' Elcock was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote forwarding a list of persons carrying on business of fire insurance in New Zealand. —Received.

A circular letter in connection with the Exchange Pool was received from the office of‘ the Minister of Finance.

The Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged receipt of copies of the Board’s annual report ’ and balance sheet for the previous year.

Messrs W. H. Price and Son, Ltd., wrote thanking the Board for its order for a hydrant.

Tn reply to the Dennrtment of Internal Affairs, in was decided to forward the draft estimates for the year. The Socretar.v of the Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote acknowledging the Board’s donation, and expressing gratitude. Authority was asked for the issue of service medals. The letter was received and the request granted. The Superintendent reported that the year had been fairly free from fires, the most serious being that at the racecourse, the main stand and contents of the tea rooms being destroyed. The motor was running well, and a demonstration of this together with the water pressure was given to the Fire Inspector, Mr Butcher, who had expressed satisfaction. He also reported on the conditions under which the Brigade had been working. During the y r ear five fires had been reported. The total insurance involved was £1.855. Tn one instance no damage had resulted and in another the building had not been insured.

A report was received from Mr Butcher expressing satisfaction at the working of the Brigade. The Secretary stated that the Board would he freed from the debt to the Broough in two years. It was reported that there had been no discrepancy' in the “tell-tale” clock. Accounts amounting to £B9/8/10 were passed for pa.vment. The estimates for the ensuing year amounting' to £G3O were approved.
