CHAMPION SWINDLER. . LONDON, February 2d. .When Thomas Johnson was convicted at Salford of fraud in a hotel, A the police revealed a remarkable carf eer of crime in many countries. Johnson ran away from home at the age of 11, but rejoined his family, and migrated to New Zealnd in 1911. He joined the Anzacs, and was wounded at Gallipoli. He deserted in France, and worked -•..y hie passage to Sbuth America, where he committed several crimes, He went to Germany in 1920, and was sentenced to live yeans’ imprisonment for holding-up a bank. Then he worked his passage to China, but deserted the ship. ’ He arrived in Australia in 1930, where he was sentenced to five years’ for the attempted robbery of a bank at Fremantle. He - was deported, but escaped at Dunkirk, where he committed more crimes. When released, he went from city to city, imposing upon hotels. He promised to quit England at the end of his sentence.
