Then he worked his passage to China, but deserted the ship. ’ He arrived in Australia in 1930, where he was sentenced to five years’ for the attempted robbery of a bank at Fremantle. He - was deported, but escaped at Dunkirk, where he committed more crimes. When released, he went from city to city, imposing upon hotels. He promised to quit England at the end of his sentence.
