N. ZEALAND V. 8. AFRICA. HOME TEAM OPENS QUIETLY. (Australian Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 4. The second cricket test opened in perfect weather. Pago won the toss, and Dempster and Weir commenced New Zealand’s innings, the first howlers being Bell and Quinn. Most of the early scoring was done by Dempster off Bell, Quinn bowling three maidens. At 11.30 a.m. the score was 16 for none, Dempster 11, Weir 4, extras 1. The score advanced steadily, mainly off Dempster’s bat. Weir had less of the bowling and his progress was slow. When 14, Dempster gave a stumping chance off McMillan, but otherwise he made no mistakes, hitting several boundaries,
After 55 minutes, Weir played on a ball from McMillan, 42—1—8. At noon the score was 46 for one wicket. Dempster continued to dominate .the batting, hitting three consecutive fours off Vincetn. Blunt was slow in getting going, defensive shots producing singles at intervals. Dempster failed to connect properly with a ball from McMillan and gave a catch at point. It was a masterly •innings and included ten fours, 79—2—64. At 12.30 p.m. the score was 84 for two. . Blunt and Vivian made steady progress and the century was reached aj|Her 97 minjutesi. passed 20 in 55 minutes, Vivian, who was batting freely, scoring 30 in 40 minutes.
