ESCAPEE CAUGHT

ANOTHER STILL AT LARCE

TRACED TO RACECOURSE.

WANGANUI, March 3

After being at liberty for a week and a half, one of the two escapees from Hautu Prison Camp, has been arrested. The prompt action by the police led to a car being traced to the Waverley racecourse to-day where hidden cleverly in the scrub the two men, Roy Norris, alias Edgar W. Allen, and Charles Bennett were surprised. The car was back- -, 4 ws > T" edj. into a jfox thorn hedge {and. bore Itluf Palmerston North: registration No 87,569 and was reported to be the five-seater Ford missing from there. Several suit cases, containing clothing were found, together with rugs and blankets, while there was an abundance of tinned food.

Bennett bolted into the scrub, and made a “get-a-away” while Norris picked up a pea-rifle' and- defied anyone to touch him Detective Walsh maintained his position, however, and eventually persuaded the man to. lay the firearm down and surrender. He was taken to Waverley lock-up, and will be brought to Wanganui to-day. Meanwhile, a shap look out is being kept by the police for the missing prisoner Bennett. Every care is being taken to see that no further cars 'are stolen, and owners in the district have been notified that. Bennett is at large, and have been warned to keen a sharp watch over their property.

After Norris was arrested, tlv scan! for Bennett was carried out until nightfall, when it had to be abandoned.
