INFANTILE PARALYSIS

, PRECAUTIONS TO BE OBSERVED. CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. “Parents are advised to keep a cloee watch on the health of their children,” said Colonel F. W. W. Dawson, Assistant Medical Officer of Health, in the course of a statement yesterday regarding the outbreak of infantile paralysis prevalent at present. The early symptoms of infantile paralysis, Colonel Dawson added, resemble the outset of a common cold—slight feverishness, cold in the head, and lassitude. A mother on observing these symptoms should keep the child in bed and send for medical assistance. All contact between the child and the other children should he avoided. Generally children should avoid contact with others, particularly in public places, schools, and places of amusement. All contacts with cases of infantile paralysis were being quarantinecVand it was necessary that the quarantine should be strictly observed. The penalty for breach ,of the quarantine regulations is £lO, and in the case of the offence continuing, a further fine of £5 for every day, or part of a day, during the continuance of the offence. Two of the three cases notified on Tuesday proved negative. One suspected case was reported yesterday.
