METHODIST CONFERENCE
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 21. Resolutions affecting temperance and public morals were discussed at the Methodist Conference yesterday. The following resolutions were adopted:— “That this conference enters its strong protest against the issue by the Government of art union permits, in which many valuable prizes are offered. It believes that this method of raising funds for even worthy objects is highly detrimental to the moral and economic interests of the Dominion, because it tends to foster the spirit of gambling, which is already a gigantic evil in the land.” A resolution urging Methodists to continue their opposition to the sale of liquor, as it was felt that it was conducive of evil practice. It was decided to set up a Social Service Association for the' Dominion. The personnel and constitution of this body will be referred to the Church Welfare Committee. APPOINTMENT OF MINISTERS. The following? appointments and •stations, affecting Methodist Ministers, associated with the West Coast, were announced' at Saturday’s session of the New Zealand Methodist Church Conference, now sitting at Christchurch. The appointments are discussed three times, and the present list, which is taken from the first reading is subject to. alteration. Rev, G. E. Brown, at present stationed at Greymouth, bas been transferred to Mornington, His place at Greymouth will be taken by Row, A. 0, Hums, formerly of Hamilton East, Rev. E, D, Pntchett, formerly at Greymouth, has been, transferred to Auckland East, Rev, J. F, Martin, at one time at Greymouth, to Papakura, Rev. M. A. McDowell, formerly relieving at Greymouth, to Wellington East, and Rev. B. J. James, formerly at Greymouth, to Petoue. Rev. J. F. Jack, formerly of Hokitika, has been transferred to Riccarton and Rev. G. K. Smith, now at Hokitika, has been transferred to Greendale, Rev. I. Burnett, of Westport, has been transferred to Kaiapoi, The following appointments for the Nelson Diocese are announced. Nelson, Rev. W. A. Burley; Richmond, Rev. R. Richaras; Blenheim, Rev. G. F. Sto'ckwell, Rev. H. S. Kings, and a home missionary; Hokitika, Rev. C. O'. Hailwood; Motueka ’ Rev. F. T. Harris, a n d Westport, Rev. C. A. Foston. Rev. T. E. Parsons, at present stationued at Reefton, will leave in April for England. A successor to him will be appointed, but the list of appointments for Home Mission stations, such as Reefton, will not be made public at present.
