Olio of the most inscrutable things is the mind of the Oriental. Here in Fiji (says a Suva correspondent) we see so many remarkable phases of it that one feels capable of believing anything of an Indian. The latest incident is one that would puzzle the psychologists. An Indian constable had two young daughters, the elder 12 years old'. Their mother died sonic years back, and the elder girl had acted as mother to her younger sister, and she proved a careful housewife to her father. She told her father she wanted to go to India, hut gave no reason. She had lived all he: life in Fiji. Her father told her he could not go, and therefore there was no chance of her going, at least, for tho present. She cried in her disappointment, and later went to bed. When coining off duty at midnight he looked in and saw the two girls sleeping quietly. Next morning the girl was found hanging from the branch of a mango tree, behind the police station. She had evidently stood on a kerosene • case, and deliberate!!/ kicked it away.

A curious point under the Workmen’s Compensation Act was argued at Westminster County Court. George Johnstone, engineer, lost an eye in June,. 1826, through a piece of steel entering it. He was paid £1 10s a week compensation for three months, and then took work on the Sudan at £4O a month, which continued till last June. He claimed that the Cl 10s a week should be paid since last July. He obtained the Sudan position—supervising excavators—through acquaintance with the contractor, he said. The contract was now finished. Judge Turner remarked: “The Battle of Copenhagen was won because of the loss of an eye,” “Mr Johnstone has a glass eye,” said counsel. Johnstone: “I must tell an employer I have only one eye, oi I should he taking the job under false pretences.” Judge Turner: “If the loss of an eye is not observable it is no disadvantage in the labour market. The House of Lords has said there is no obligation to disclose it.” Johnstone’s former employers submitted that a man was not entitled to compensation if he is able to earn wages equal or in excess of the wages lie earned before the accident, and the judge upheld this view.
