CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday, present: Messrs G. W. Armitage (chairman), W. A. Banks, R. Wild, J. W. Preen, C. S. Thomson, J. G.-Gow, S.

R. Evison, W. Johnson, J. J. Hurley, S. Smith, W. P. Spencer and H. Bignall.

Appointments made included :Koiterangi Upper, Mr S. C. Knight, sole teacher; Moonlight, Mr G. S. Pattison, sole teacher; Otira, Mr H. M. Campbell, head teacher; Ruru, Miss E. M. Pedder, assistant mistress.

Resignations accepted included: Otira, Mr J. E. Fraser; Wataroa, Miss D. M. C’aldow. Mr Wild acting on jiotice of motion, moved that the Board’s decision to ask the Department of Education’s authority to carry on present conveyance arrangements for a month be rescinded.

Mr Wild pointed out that the financial position to-day was sufficient to warrant this. The motion was passed. A letter was received from the Cheviot School Committee protesting against the proposed change of junior teachers every term.

The Department of Education advised that teachers unemployed and those temporarily employed last year would receive four grading marks. A circular had been received from the Department approving of pupils remaining in its schools for a year after passing Standard VI. The Minister of Education (the Hon It. Masters) had approved of the extension of junior free places for an additional year. The Department stated that the board had no power to allow ex-probationers to act voluntarily in the s<-'b o( ds.

Circulars were received . from the Department suggesting that every ■ effort should be made to reduce the cost to parents of books required by the children, and that the fullest use should he made of second-hand books. BUILDING COMMITTEE. Greymouth:—The Chairman of the Board was authorised to sign the plan forwarded by the Greymouth Borough Council in connection with the proposed exchange of a portion of Native Reserve for part of the Town Belt enclosed in the school grounds. Kokatahi Lower:—A letter was received from the Director of Education expressing regret that in the circumstances of the case the Department could not justifiably approve payment of house allowance. It was decided to protest against the Department’s decision and to furnish a plan and photographs of the converted building with details of the living accommodation.

Ross: —A report was presented by , the Chairman of the Buildings Committee recommending that the school building, with the exception of one room in tKe newest portion be demolished and the remaining room provided with modern windows -and a folding partition to divide it into two, a proposal which had been agreed to bv the Committee. The report was adopted and the visit approved; an .application for a grant to be submitted to the Department in the usual way, although it had been made clear to the Committee by Mr H. J. Bignell that at the present time there was no prospect of, th<? Board’s representations being fraught with success. The Foreman’s report for the month was received and adopted. foreman;® report. Cob den School: —The calsomining of the interior of the school has been completed. Totaira Fflat School: A new tap lias been supplied for the tank at this school, the old tap being of no further use. While at his school the teacher asked that two cupboard locks and one table drawer lock be provided; also that the cords in several of the windows he renewed. Jtotomanu School: —As instructed, the fencing material lias been supplied to the Rotamann School Committee. Blaketown School During the mont a commencement has been made with the improvements to the hoys’ urinal and good progress is being made. Hokitika School:—At this school the septic tank has been cleaned out and altered according to plans supplied by Mr Bigg. This is now working satisfactorily and should give no further trouble. Grey Main School: -During the holidays the calsomining of several class rooms has been carried out. This completes the interior renovations of the whole of the school. Humphreys School: —'I he joinery for the modern windows at this school was put in hand during the month and now completed. Wataron 'School :—As instructed the Committee has hen supplied with a new tank for the school.
