DIAMOND SLUMP
DE BEERS MINES CLOSING. (United Press Association.—By Electric , Telegraph. —Copyright.; CAPETOWN. Feb. 19. The Directorate of De Beers Diamond Mines have decided to close the mines for an indefinite period, pending an improvement in the worlds diamond market. The decision becomes effective on March 31st. It affects fifteen hundred whites, and many thousand natives. It will mean a .probable curtailment of expenditure in the Union of wages amounting to two and a quarter million sterling. A number of whites will be retained as part time workers. Those dismissed will receive liberal cash payments.
