SHIPPING APPOINTMENT

RETIRED DUTCH MASTER

LIKELY TO BE VICE-CONSUL AUCKLAND, February 16.

To take up a position as tourist agent at Auckland for the K.P.M. Line, better knwon as the Royal Packet Navigation Company, Captain F. Bauer arrived from Sydney by the steamer Sonoma this morning. It is understood that Captain Bauer will shortly be appointed vice-consul for the Netherlands at Auckland,

Captain Bauer, who is accompanied by his wife and two sons, was at sea for 40 years, and associated with the K.P.M. Line for 30 yeais. For 3 years prior to his recent retirement he was master of the Xiemv Holland. Throughout his sea-going career Captain Bauer was singularly fortunate, and was never concerned in a major accident. ft is Captain Bauer’s opinion that trade with the Dutch East Indies can be inproved in certain lines, and his wide knowledge should be of considerable value to tourists. His appointment will in no way affect the local agency for the K.P.M. Line, which is held by Messrs. Itussel! and Somers, Ltd. “I am very glad to he able to come to so wonderful a country as New Zealand now that I have retired,” said the captain. “Although I have been in most of the countries in the world, this is my first visit to New Zealand but I have been told many hundreds oi times what a splendid country it is.” Captain Bauer is a Hollander, and his wife an Englishwoman, Their two sons were born in Australia.
