AUCKLAND, Feb. 17

The Union steamer Wairuna is held up because of a dispute between the company and the crew over the rate of exchange between New Zealand and the United States. The ship arrived on Saturday from the Pacific Coast ,and the crew were paid on Monday. While in American f soothe of the crew received advances on wages allegedly on the understanding that the amount they drew would he at the rnto of throe point forty-five dollars to the pound, the exchange rate then ruling, When these inert were paW on Monday, the advances were deducted. The men claimed that the money advanced to them in Amei ica should have been at parity rate of four dollars eighty cents to the pound instead of only three dollais 4o cents. AVlien the cargo was discharged, the men refused to sail until then demands were met, the ship s depaiture was then postponed, from last night till noon, but at one, this afternoon, she had not sailed. It is understood that both sides are firm.

A SETTLEMENT REACHED

AUCKLAND, Feb. 17

In the Wairuna dispute a settlement was reached this afternoon. The terms wore not announced. The vessel sailed this evening for Napier.
