BROADCASTING

B STATIONS’ DISSATISFACTION. NEW BOARD CRITICISED. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 5. Strong dissatisfaction is expressed by the directors of 2 Z.W. and 3Z.C., B class radio stations, at the attitude of the Broadcasting Board, regarding financial assistance sought to enable them to carry on. Tlie managing-director, Mr Nimmo, of 2 Z.W. stated that the reply given by the Board was most discouraging, and indicated that the Board was entirely unappreciative of the value oi service given, either to listeners or in the effect on the Board’s revenue. They were convinced that the Board was unwilling to do anything for them. Pah-’ liamentary debates repeatedly indicated assistance would be given B Class Stations, affording a worthy service, and Parliament intended that this should be done. All that was asked was that, until the question of national coverage was determined, the Board should contribute to the riming expenses. “It is now evident that we cannot expect any assistance for some time,” lie said, “and there is no guarantee that anything will be forthcoming. In these circumstances, there is no inducement for the directors to continue. They have therefore been compelled to determine upon an early curtailment of the service, and it is possible that the station will have to close down altogether.” Mr Wood head, of 3 Z.C., said that the Board’s attitude, apparently, was one of discouragement. It had declined to continue the facilities given by the Broadcasting Company for morning services, and also declined the use of relay lines, which were available under the Company’s regime. The only action taken by the Board so far would result in the deterioration of the service. The directors of 3 Z.C. have been forced to the conclusion, he said, that the Board is adopting a policy of discouragement to stations, hence there is no financial alternative but to consider the immediate curtailment, and possibly cessation, of the service.
