FALSE PRETENCES. ONE OFFENDER GAOLED. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 4. Pleas of guilty were made by Keith El ford Craig and George Sim Mouat, before Mr Page, S'.M., to-day, on joint charges of stealing two sums of twenty pounds. Craig was also charged with a third offence of stealing twenty pounds. The detective stated the two accused started a butchery business at Petoiie. They advertised for an assistant and secured twenty pounds bond from Olsen. Further sums for the same amount were obtained from two other men. Craig, was the prime moved, and took all the money and the three men who advanced me bonds got nothing. Craig, who had two previous convictions for false pretences and theft, was sentenced to six months gaol and Mouat was admitted to probation for two years and was ordered to refund £4O. FIREMAN FINED. WELLINGTON, February Fireman John Joseph Howard, aged 44, when stopped by a Customs Officer leaving the Mavama yesterday, rushed to the side of the wharf and threw a parcel into the water. The officer and the fireman came to grips, and the latter was caught in a headlock and thrown, afterwards being locked up.

At the Police Court to-day, Howard was fined ton pounds for resisting a Customs officer, and a pound for stealing a pound of butter which he had wrapned in a parcel, in default one month’s gaol.
