A grass fire in the Rolleston district this afternoon burnt out about 2000 acres of dried pasture' land. before it was got under control by hundreds of fire-fighters from All over the district. Six hundred acres of young pine plantations wore, also detalrotod. The only stock losses were about twenty sheep, which were overtaken before they could bo driven to ploughed land for safety. Olio farmer, 'who left his car on the road while he went to beat the fire back from his home, returned to find the car burned. The fire was the worst that the district lhas known for 35yeai\s. If it had spread to /the closely-settled area surrounding Springston and Lincoln, as it would have done, but for the work of the fire-fighters, it would have been a serious disaster.
