HUTT STRIKERS. BALLOT AGAINST STRIKE. (By Telegraph. —Per Press Association WELLINGTON, February l. A meeting was held at Lower Hutt this morning by a section of workers opposed to a strike. It was attended by about 150, but owing to a continuous uproar, it was impossible. to say whait was the feeling of the majority. Numerous motions proposed were either unput or when put it was vupossible to say what the voting was, only a. portion of those present voting. At .stages the meeting was being addressed by as many as four persons simultaneously. It appeared, however, that many were dissatisfied with the strike methods, and were anxious to resume Work. The Mayor of Lower Hutt addressed some strikers in the street saying they could resume work to-morrow morning if they wished, and that he wag to-day interviewing, the authorities at Wellington with a view of getting something more in the way of wages for relief works on which the men liad been engaged. He said -the Eastborne job had been made relief worft by order of the Unmployment Board. A strike ballot at three jobs in the eitv showed 280 against a strike ancl 21 for. Two other jobs were visited by would-be pickets this morning but the men definitely refused 1 to strike and as there was strong police protection, the strikers departed. , A NEW SCHEME, UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. TAURANGA, February ]. A letter, to local bodies supervising unemployed relief work in this district, from Air E. H. Bircliall. investigating Officer of the Unemployment Board sets out a new scheme which, it is understood, the Board intends to apply to all districts throughout the Dominion. The communication states that all men employed under No. 5 scheme shall work five days, or forty hours, from Monday until Friday evening to earn relief paid. In the event of a worker not completing the full time, the relief granted is to be computed proportionately, and provision iis to ht- made to prevent a worker being IKMiaW-sed through accepting private employment.
