NEW SHIPPING SERVICE
DUNEDIN—AUSTRA LI A. TWO .STEAMERS TO BEGIN RUNNING IN MAY DUNEDIN, January 29. It Was definitely announced; to-day that a new shipping company, to be known as the Southern Pacific Shipping Company of New Zealand, Ltd., hopes to have two steamers running about May lin. a direct passenger and cargo service from 'Dunedin- to Sydney and from Dunedin to Hobart and Melbourne.., The headquarters of t.he now company 'will be at Dunedin, ft rid already suitable offices for conducting such business have been secured. The steamers to be employed in the services will be fast and modern and of suitable draught to suit the conditions of Otago harbour. The amount of 'support received by the promoters, both from Australia and mow Zealand, has been very encouraging. A large number of New Zealand and Australian merchants have expressed ’their intention to support the new line, and these merchants have already taken a financial interest in the company. The prospectus of the company will be issued next month. •Arrangements have been made with overseas ‘shipping cioinpanies ,r « send their tourist passengers direct to Dunedin by the Southern Pacific Shipping Company’s vessels.
PASSENGERS AND CARGO. .• - ' ■ i 1 The directors of the new company are comprised largely of experienced shipping men. It is the intention of the company 'to provide passenger and cargo services between the iSouth Island and .Australia which have never before been equalled. The steamers to be employed in the service will carry me and two-berth cabin passengers, and accommodation will be spacious and comfortable. The ships will be com manded by Royal Nava) Reserve officers. The service will be maintained by two steamers at the beginning, and will be a, fortnightly one.
