GOLDFISH CRAZE
. "in AUSTRALIAN CITIES. POPULAR PRESENTS. The craze for goldfish is growing daily in Melbourne asd Sydney, Dealers say that this Christmas goldfish in bowls were popular a© presents to replace flower bowls, One big dealer said that in less than three weeks before Christmas he sold more than 809 Japanese and Chinese goldfish. There had been just as strong a demand for the beautiful yet cheap paradise fish, Chinese, Japanese and Italian newts, the tango tortoises from Japan and the less colourful ones from China, the ordinary Australian golden carp and the pretty red Planorbis Cornelos ramshorns snails from England. Owners of goldfish say that although the beautiful feather tailed fish cannot sing or talk, they are fascinating pets and require little attention. At present dealers say that Chinese goldfish are becoming scarce, because crews of boat's from China have been prevented from bringing them out. Companies say that goldfish are inclined to want too much fresh water, and vessels’ supplies are apt to run low because of that.
Goldfish are now selling in Melbourne at between 4s and 5s a pair.
