WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.
GAMES NEAKIN'G FINAL STAGES.
Tiie West Coast Tennis Championships were again favoured with fine weather yesterday when. play wa s resumed on the Hokitika, Ali Saints, and St. Mary’s courts, although „ conditions became rather chilly late in the afternoon. Considerable interest attaches to the- different sections," as each la now drawing to the final stages. Although the tournament has not been outstanding in - the way of brilliance, • one of the chief characteristics. has been. the general •steadiness'* judgment' and courtcraft of the pfayers, and yesterday were .witnessed '- some excellent ' games in this respect. Two of, perhaps, the most outstanding players of the tournament, Wild and Larsen, met in the semi-final of the singles championship. Wild took the first set comfortably, 6—2, butLarson was more than a match for him in the next driving well and placing nicely, keeping Wild on the move throughout, and he ran out 6—2. The final set -saw Larsen on top. Winning the first three games, he won 6—l. Steadiness and consistency were the - keynot&s of his success, although Wild was always a factor to be contended with. Gooch arid Blackmoro, the other' semi-finalists also met but pooch had. little difficulty in disposing of his opponent, and took the first two sets comfortably. • Several good games were -seen in championship combineds. Larsen and- j Mrs Ecclesfielcl beat ; Freitas and. Miss Cositello' on the third -set, after a long,’steady struggle, while Dougherty and Miss Leslie -staged a good exhibition against the lad,, and his partner, Mrs Spiers. Langrish and Miss Kelly were eliminated, after an exciting third set,, by Burley and Mrs Wames. Wild and Miss jJs.teven.s-on, in' ithe last game .of the day, played 'veil against Larsen and Mrs Eeclesfiekl, taking-the first set 9—7. Wild and Gooch provided a good,’ partnership in the men’s doubles ' and j Experience and 'general •' courtcraft Ijfw them winners against Turner, and' fffipugherty'. 'ijfThe handicap events are still .in the fjreliminary stages. It fs the general, opinion that the urnament bsis- been most successful ! a social, as well as a playing iJjspint of view, and the thanks of :playfs are due to the energy of the -secIfehnry, Mr Rett- Dawson, for the expeditions and considerate manner in' which he arranged the -games and attended to the many calls made, upon ms services'. $ Miss Costello, who" was absent on #e first day, and consequently mi&sed the championship events, appeared yesterday, and showed herself a player of class, reaching the sembfinal of • the handicap singles.' of yesterday’s games were afs follow:- .- .
