SUNKEN SUBMARINE

SEARCH CONTINUES,

HOPES OF SAFETY FAILING

(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)

(Received this day at 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, January 29

The Rear Admiral commanding the search reponts at 6.4o—“The possibility of saving lives is almost hopeless. Have temporarily abandoned operation on an obstruction discovered on 26th. January- The sweep was continually (Slipping, preventing the divers reaching it-. A diver has not yet reached the other obstruction found yesterday, but may be successful at the next tide. A further search to-day revealed an obstruction six miles off Portland Bill. Divers have been on the bottom nearby, but thus far have not reachedi the obstruction. Operations continue.” The last named obstruction refers to a’discovery following seaplanes reporting a quantity of oil. The destroyer Sabre dropped an anchor rn the neighbourhood, resulting in further oil coming to the surface, suggesting the occupants of the submarine, hearing the anchor might have released oil to indicate their wherebouts, although it is realised the anchor might liaPe penetrated some other obstacle. Three divers fruitlessly made an effort to reach the obstruction.

The Admiralty Communique in connedtion with the reported lights and pxplosiions contrasts the difference of eight hours between the time thereof and the Tynesider’s report. The Communique adds that the light and explosions are both unaccountable.
