LAWN TENNIS

WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE FIRST DAY’S PLAY. Glorious weather prevailed for the first day of the West Coast tennis championships which were comemnced at Hokitka - on the Hokitika and All Saints’ courts yesterday. There were few surprises • in >ne different classes, but a good standard was displayed and throughout the day the various matches evoked much interest and not a little applause. Particular interest was taken in the appearance of It. Pattinson, a boy of 14 years, a left-hander, who created a. very favourable impression, and who gave much promise of development into a fine class of player. He won bis first round of the singles against/ Smith of Greymouth, on the third set, but was eliminated in the third round by AVild 6—2, 7—9, 6—o. He did not appear at ease in the first set, but the next one was a fine display of accurate placing by both players, together with a good knowledge of •courtcraft. The tMird sot. however went to Wild who won easily.

Another contest which evoked much interest and applause was the match between Blackmore and Burley, which was won by the former 7—5, 6—3. In this game both men drove forcibly, and the match was played for the greater part from the back lines.
