RELIEF WORK

SUSPENSION IN CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) CrmrSTCHIJRCTI, January 27. Because it is attracting men from the liarvesting work, the No. 5 Scheme is to be suspended, as from February Ist, in many of the counties of Canterbury. The Paparua, Halswell, Malvern and Selwyn County Councils have already had a. notification of the suspension of the scheme in their areas. It. is understood that other County Councils may be notified within the next few days.

A number of complaints have been received by the Unemployment Board that men are staying on relief works and refusing to accept the lowered wages that now are offered for harvesting work, although, in the aggregate, these wages are still greater than those given for relief work.
