WAR ON GUNMEN

ARMED BANDITS OF LONDON. • LONDON, January 12. Band&ta her© are s'liowinjj an increasing disposition to carry, and use revolvers, but Lord Trenchard, the new Chief Commissioner of Police, has declared war on th e gunmen, and judges are passing salutary sentences on crimials caught in possession of firearms. Few of them have even dared to carry wfeapone for purposes, of intimidation, for they know that if they are caught, their sentences will be heavily increased. Latterly,- however, there has been a disquieting growth of armed banditry. “Armed criminals are becoming more numerous,” said Mi- 171151106 McCardie, in charging the grand jury at Leeds Assizes; and Mr Justice Humphreys, in sentencing to 15 years’ imprisonment a gunman who had attempted to murder a constable at Thames Ditton, declared that the law would have to be administered fearlessly if the police were to be protected against murderous attacks.
