The New Zeaalnd Lawnj Tennis Championships were, continued to-day, good progress being made in all the sections. The weather was beautifully line and again there was a large attendance present. The New South Wales ladies lent additional interest tu their sections. There were no surprises in tno men’s singles, although in one or two instances prominent players were fully extended. This was notably the case with A. C. Stedman, who was taken to five .sets by Smith, the Rotorua champion. Paitterson, of Canterbury, was the first .seeded player to be eliminated v The members of the New South Wales team were all sucessful in their matches, both singles and doubles. The Lawn Tennis association has decided to issue a challenge in the American zone for the Davis Cup, this year. The Council has not yet decided whether to send a teamY until after the Australian Championships at Adelaide, in February. WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS. TOURNAMENT OPENED TO-DAY. In bright, ;pleasant conditions, tho West Coast Tennis 'Championships were commenced here this morning, play taking place on :the ; courts of the Hokitika and All Saints’ Clubs. A record number of entries were received, competitors hailing from different parts of, and beyond, the West Coast, and the standard of play displayed was equal to that of previous championships. The fine conditions, and promise of interesting play attracted a fair attendance of the public at each courts this morning, the spectators increasing in number during the afternoon. Perhaps the greatest surprise of this morning’s play was the defeat of Smith, the leading man in the Greymouth Club, by R. Pattinson, a lad in his middle ’teens.
