damage to north wall. The Hokitika Harbour Board met yesterday afternoon when there were present:—Messrs M. H. Houston (Chairman), D. P. Stuart, W. E. Richard*, J- J- Mclntosh. N. S'esaonal greetings were received from the Wellington and Bluff Harbour Boards and the Railway Department.—R^eived. The Bank of New Zealand notified that the rate of interest had been reduced to 6J ner cent, as from November Ist.—Received. A claim for £1 3s, for tools lost while in the employ of the Board was presented by Mr J. Campbell.—Approved. The Signalman (Mr G. Howe), reported that the channel over the bar was in good condition, running fairly straight out to sea and carrying, during the last fortnight from 11 to 14 feet of water. The river entrance wa K wide and easy of navigation. The work of deviating the river back to , the wharf was proving satisfactory and with every flood the volume of water was increasing. Serious damage had lately taken place to the north wall about 300 ft. east of the extreme end and 80ft. west of the main beach. At this point the wall was leaning out of line, and portions had broken away. The wall would require strengthening, and he outlined the work that would be required. Members agreed that the work was imperative and that some form of repairs should be undertaken as soon as possible. • In answer to the Chairman, the Secretary .said the cost would run into C £2OO or £3OO, timber being the main j item. Mr Stuart recommended that temporary repairs should be undertaken immediately to keep the piles in position, and it was decided to adopt the suggestion. Tt was decided to call in the sum of £SOO of the Board’s £IOOO at call for contingency purposes. The Board then ndiourned to enable members to inspect the position affected.
