MURDER CHARGE

LYNCHING OF HAWAIIAN. U.S. NAVY SENSATION. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) HONOLULU, January 9. Tile city of Honolulu is quiet, but yet is tense after having seen its first, lynching. An American Naval Officer, his wife’s mother, and one enlisted man. are being held for the murder in connection with the lynching. The arrests were made alter a Hawaiian youth, who wa.s facing trial for assaulting the Officer’s wife, was kidnapped from the Courthouse and was shot and killed.

The American Ami}' and Naval personnel at Honolulu arc being conferred to their stations in order to prevent any further trouble. Word has now been received from Washington that when the American Naval manoeuvres are being held here in February next, the men are not to be allowed to go ashore

The woman in the case is prominent in both New York and London society. She is Mrs Granville Fortescue. her son-in-law is Lieutenant Thomas Massie.

BOYCOTTED BY NAVY

Washington, January 10. The Chief Officer of Naval operations, Admiral Pratt, Inis announced that the island of Oahu will he boycotted by the fleet during the coining Naval man. oeuvres, no liberty being allowed its personnel therein.'

SYDNEY, January 11. The victim, was Joseph Kahahawai, a Japanese youth, who is accused of being one of five criminals who assaulted Airs Massie, a naval officer’s wife last September. The police say that the youth was seized, and carried into Airs. Fortescue’s residence, stripped and torHired. He was thrust into a bath in order to get a confession, and was then shot. The dead body was taken away in a car, driven by Airs Fortescue, who is the . mother of Mrs Alassie, The affair has created a sensation, as, for months past, there has been a plot among naval officers to seek revenge for assaults by natives on white women.
