PLUNKET SHIELD
CANTERBURY SCORES 218
(By Telegraph — L‘t. Tress Association)
AUCKLAND, January 8
The Plunket (shield match between Auckland and Canterbury, which commenced at Eden Park yeterday was responsible for an unaccountable batting co,lapse of the home team which was dismissed for 56 runs in the first innings. The wicket was good and the weather conditions ideal so it is all the more surprising that the bats-, nun should fail.
Seine members of the Caiitcrliiir;, team are reputed to be amount Liu-, leading batsmen or the Diiin.u.oii, but while they fared much better than the Aucklanders, the visitors’ total did not reach expectations. Roberts made a liberal contribution to Canterbury s total. Auckland made a. much better start in its second innings, Prater in particular playing the bowling with <rioni confidence.
The Canterbury bowlers were on top all the way in Auckland’s first innings. Burrows, swinging away, took four wickets for 24 runs, and Merritt got among the tail to secure three foi six.
Roberts played a solid innings top scoring for Canterbury. Although unable to do much with Cieverley he scored the majority of the runs with a late cut past point.
