A number of farmers' meetings have declared against the, Government's adhering to the gold standard. They culminated in a largely attended meeting at Standerton which unanimously requested the Government to link up with the sterling. General Van bmuts stated: “South Africa will have to leave the gold standard. We have striven to rebuild the nation after the devastation of the Boer War. We are at present in a worse position than when we returned to our wrecked homes.” BANKERS PROPOSAL. BERLIN, January 6. International bankers reporter! to recommend a year’s extension of the standstill agreement.
