EIGHTEEN ARRESTS MADE. (Received this day at 9.25 a.mi CALCUTTA, January 5. Although demonstrations protesting against tin’ arrest of the Congress leaders are generally quiet, disturbances have occurred at Allahabad and Cawr.pore. At the former place, three were killed and many injured by crushing in a procession which was dispersed by the police. Eighteen were arrested including the leaders. At Cawnpore, crowds shouted revolutionary slogans when passing British officials. Altogether the Government can fully be satisfied with the situation throughout the country. AN IMPOSING DISPLAY. BRITISH TROOPS ON THE MARCH. CALCUTTA, January 5. There was an imposing display of nearly one thousand British naval and military, and Indian forces at Chittagong ito-day, which is the hot-bed of the Irevolutiouary movement. The cruiser “Effingham,” the flagship of the EastIndies squadron, landed detachments of sailors and marines and naval guns, and they were joined by Gurkha and Mahratta regulars. Thousands of Indians watched tlw march through the town. Hundreds oi new recruits were secured for the European Association. A mass meeting was held at Calcutta, approving of the Association’s policy, which insists upon the safeguarding of European interests in India, and applauding the action taken against the Congress.
